1854 LONDON GAZETTE
NOTES: Searches were made on key words such as “daguerreotype” etc.; “photographer”/“photographic”, etc.; “stereoscope” etc. Occasionally the search engine missed entries which were found only by chance. Thus this should not be considered a complete listing of all photography-related entries. With patents I could not always tell if a name listed was a patent agent or the inventor. When unclear no entry was made.

1854 TIMES:
ver. 11/24/2020
NOTES:
--Data has been gathered online using various word searches in the Times, which is somewhat hit-and-miss. Sometimes relevant entries were missed with that search but found through other searches. Thus one cannot rely on the Times word searches for complete accuracy. There are likely to be inadvertent omissions.
--Data has been organized by name or company title. This is easier to research given multiple ads with differing information is not unusual. Word searches on variations of “daguerreotype,” “photograph”, “stereograph” have been used to locate entries in the Times. Frequently the word search missed entries, but as photographic ads tend to be gathered together hopefully not too many entries have been missed. It should not, however, be assumed that all entries have been located.
~Names:
--When incomplete name published and full name is known, it has been
provided in brackets. Names in ALL CAPS. are in the
photography business; those w/o caps are not photographers.
When I searched avail. city and business directories [CD or BD],
London Photographers A-Z, and Ancestry.com, and did not find
full names, “[?]” has been noted. If unknown or several poss.
candidates, no data has been provided.
--Names in want ads were sometimes pseudonyms. They may, or may not
have been entered. My judgement.
--Initials only listed. When poss. these have been searched. If still
unidentifiable, they are listed under “Initials Only” section. If they
are obviously a photographer or associated with the business they
have been entered in the names index; if only selling a camera etc.,
then not entered.
--Occupations. Opticians, jewelers, publishers, framers, stationers, etc.
were also involved in the photographic business. When someone
is known to have a different occupation, that is noted. When
likely not a photographer but occupation cannot be ascertained,
“nog” = “no occupation given” is used.
~Anonymous entries: These ads usually have addresses. Until they can be linked
to a specific photographer or company, they are entered as anonymous.
The London Post Office Directory for 1856 (earlier one is 1851) has been
useful as organized by streets with building numbers and names as well as
business directory. If a match could be made, it was referenced under the
“Names” section; if only possible matches, then entry remains under
anonymous with suggestion.
--Addresses are in London or Middlesex unless noted. “nag” = No address given”
--Dates for ads are rendered as month/day/, i.e. “(1/3) = “Jan. 3”. Many ads ran for long
periods of time. Only the first date an ad was located has been entered. This may
not be the first true entry, only the first found.
--Page numbers added only for articles, not for ads given their high volume. Page #s can
frequently be located doing an on-line search.
--Indexer’s discretion has been used in selecting which ads to index. Want ads for
equipment, studios, etc. normally entered only when they can be associated with
a specific person or relevant address. Indexer’s prerogative. Erred on data
capture side.
--TANGENTIAL information: Added AFTER name/title entries. Activities, people,
etc. who were popular were frequently photographed or referenced. Knowing the
popularity of a subject helps to date images. Dates entered only when potentially
relevant, otherwise general trend of a year is enough.

* NEWS STORIES:
--Jan. 9, 1854, p. 7 Photographic Society. New group holding exhibit. Technical
progress amazing. Process “…still mainly mechanical cannot, of course, interfere with those branches of art which set forth the invisible idea of the artist… Where accurate imitation alone is wanted the photographist may defy all competition.”
--May 27, 1854, p. 6 Court case before Vice Chancellor Sir W. P. Wood. William henry
Fox Talbot v Henderson. Summary of case
--July 7, 1854, p. 12: Crystal Palace. The Queen and Prince Albert went there July 6. “Among the objects which particularly attracted their notion here was the stall which has recently been fitted up by Mr. Delamotte for the exhibition of his splendid photographs and
stereoscopic views. The artist has devoted himself, since the commencement of the undertaking, to the illustration of its progress and noblest efforts by the proceeds of Fox, Talbot, and Daguerre. His collection is extremely interesting, some of the sun pictures helping the mind to a most perfect and refined appreciation of the subjects which they represent. This is particularly observable in the views of the Egyptian Courts, which, being necessarily reduced models themselves, receive through the stereoscope an expansive effect, rising almost to the grandeur of the originals.”
--July 17, 1854, p. 7: Improvements in Photography. At conversazione at Polytechnic
Institution exhibits included the largest [life size] and smallest [2”x3”] photos taken so far. Exhibited by Mayall.
--Aug. 9, 1854, p. 12 Reprint from Madison (Indiana) Courier):
“The Story of Miss Delia Webster. [Abolitionist]—Some ten years or more ago several indictments were found by the grand jury at Lexington, Kentucky, against Miss Webster,
for running away slaves, or aiding them to escape. She was tried on one, convicted, sentenced for 10 years [2 years], and became an inmate of the Kentucky State Prison. But she was pardoned by the then Governor Crittenden, mainly through the influence of the keeper, Craig. Shortly thereafter she went east. After remaining with her friends a short time, she went to New York city, and established herself as a daguerreotypist and manufacturer of window shades…” [goes in to business with Craig, she teaches his kids, relations terminated, she moved to farm she purchased in Kentucky. Arrested on suspicion [of what?] at instance of Craig, but discharged by judge. Prosecutors had old indictments revived; warrants issued, she escaped to Indiana. Story of this abolitionist continues at length. Craig is shot but not mortally.]
--Sept. 28, 1854 p. 7 Reprinting from New York Tribune, letter from Japan from U.S. steamer “Powhattan off Cape King, (Island of Niphon), May 14, 1854. [Perry Expedition; author
is not noted] “In one of the larger temples a place has been arranged for the daguerreotype and Mr. Brown [Eliphalet M. Brown Jr.] is actively at work. He has obtained many very fine daguerreotypes of the Japanese, and will have a fine collection to show when he reaches home. ..”
