NOTES:  Searches were made on key words such as “daguerreotype” etc.; “photographer”/“photographic”, etc.; “stereoscope” etc.   Occasionally the search engine missed entries which were found only by chance.  Thus this should not be considered a complete listing of all photography-related entries.  With patents I could not always tell if a name listed was a patent agent or the inventor.  When unclear no entry was made.

TIMES [London]: 1856

ver. 1/26/2021 (PF NOTE:  DONE)

            NOTES:

--Data has been gathered from printouts of photographic ads that were located, as well as online using various word searches in the [London] Times.  Word searches are somewhat hit-and-miss.  Sometimes relevant entries were missed with one search but found with others.

--Data has been organized by name or company title.  This is easier for researchers as multiple ads with new information is usual.  Word searches on variations of “daguerreotype,” “photograph”, “stereograph” have been used to locate entries.  Frequently word searches missed entries, but as photographic ads tend to be gathered together hopefully not too many entries have been missed.  It should not, however, be assumed that all entries have been located.

                        ~Names

--When incomplete name published and full name is known, it has been

provided in brackets.  Names in ALL CAPS. are in the

photography business; those w/o caps are not photographers.

When I searched avail. city and business directories [CD or BD],

London Photographers A-Z, and Ancestry.com, and did not find

full names, “[?]” has been noted.  If unknown or several poss.

candidates, no data has been provided.

--Anonymous photographer entries:  Ads for photographs etc. for which a

photographer is unknown are entered under as “anonymous”.

~Anonymous buying & selling entries:  These ads have only addresses and

initials or pseudonyms.  Those whose initials cannot be identified as a

specific photographer or company, are entered here, first by numbered

address and secondly when unnumbered.  They appear after NAMES.

--Addresses are in London or Middlesex unless noted.  “nag” = No address given "/p>

--Dates for ads are rendered as month/day/, i.e. “(1/3) = “Jan. 3”.  Many ads ran for long

periods of time. Only the first date an ad was located has been entered.  This may

not be the first true entry, only the first found.

--Page numbers added only for articles, not for ads given their high volume.  Page #s can

frequently be located doing an on-line search.

--Indexer’s discretion has been used in selecting which ads to index.  Want ads for

equipment, studios, etc. normally entered only when they can be associated with

a specific person or relevant address.  Indexer’s prerogative.  Erred on data

capture side.

--TANGENTIAL information:  Added AFTER name/title entries.   Activities, people,

etc. who were popular were frequently photographed or referenced.  Knowing the

popularity of a subject helps to date images. Dates entered only when potentially

relevant, otherwise general trend of a year is enough.

Data from online source is marked with an * ; otherwise data gathered from hard copy

Photographic Defence Fund.  Meeting held Jan. 3 in London for purpose of considering the present position of the photographic art in reference to claims of Talbot and the course which should be pursued by those who are interested in the art, to support the important verdict obtained in the action “Talbot v. Laroche”.  Resolutions agreed on:

-Group feels deep regret at Talbot’s attempt to embrace the collodion process

within the meaning of his 1841 patent. Said process is superior to his. They are in

                        agreement with the verdict.

-Progress of photographic art depends upon resistance to Talbot’s claim and all should

                        help Laroche in defraying expenses.

-Committee formed to collect subscriptions.  Committee consists of Matthew Marshall,

Photography in the Crimea.  Although photographic art has been already applied to an almost boundless range of subjects, it has produced nothing at all comparable in importance to the large collection of views now exhibiting at the gallery of the Water Colour Society in Pall Mall East.  The artist to whom we are indebted for this extraordinary illustration of the war is Mr. Roger Fenton, who, regardless of danger and difficulty, has spent the spring and summer of the present year in taking photographic views of every figure and every scene at the seat of war likely to prove of interest to the public, and has just returned to England with the results of his labours, which completely fill the large Pall Mall Gallery.  Portraits, not only of Generals, but of obscure persons, illustrative of the present life in the Crimea, extensive landscapes, and characteristic interiors have all come in for a share of his attention, and have been transferred to paper with all the accuracy that belongs to the most modern of pictorial arts.  As the pictures are nearly 300 in number, it may fairly be said that such a detailed representation of the state of existence about Sebastopol has never yet been presented to public inspection.  We can only regret that Mr. Fenton did not remain a little longer on the borders of the Euxine, as he might then have had an opportunity of employing his talents and his industry in the interior of the now fallen city.  The whole series is to be published under the patronage of the Queen, the Emperor of the French, and Prince Albert.

*          The Siege of Sebastopol [by anon.]:

“…The events of this war, or rather the scenery of the camp and of the country round about us, will be amply illustrated by numerous artists, and the daguerreotype has been used by skillful hands to perpetuate the incidents of camp existence and the groupings and still life of the tents.  One gentleman who came out here with a great reputation, and who brought out a letter from Prince Albert to facilitate his arrangements, fixed his tent at headquarters; but he received very little encouragement there, and, as he could not get even the temporary attendance of a servant, he soon moved to other quarters, and has been making the rounds of the camp.  He has produced some excellent landscapes, and has even succeeded in ‘fixing’ the effect of the smoke of the guns, but his portraits are not so successful.  These are artists for the pictorial journals out here, and amateur sketchers, so that London will soon be made familiar with the external aspect of ‘the camp before Sebastopol’. *          The Vatican Manuscripts.  To the Editor of the times.

Writer, S. Leigh Sotheby, The Woodlands, Norwood, sends photograph of one of the designs of the Ars Moriendi (Black book), which his wife, Mrs. Sotheby has done as a trial of how far photography might be useful for his forthcoming book.  The photo is one of many facsimile plates of nearly 100 executed for his work and shows its accuracy.  “There are, however, some objections to its application, namely, the great expenses of printing and mounting; also the great uncertainty of the permanency of the impressions, and the difficulty of obtaining the impressions of a uniform colour.  The fading of photographs is one of the greatest drawbacks to all amateurs and professional men in their photographic pursuits.  It is a subject, however, that is now being brought under the consideration of the most eminent photographers in this country, and it is to be hoped that the result of their experiments being made it will render the now very unsatisfactory and somewhat expensive pursuit one of the most gratifying and most useful invention ever discovered. *          Photographing Documents.  To the Editor of the Times.

“In The Times of November 29 is a letter on the subject of the application of photography to the facsimile reproduction of old documents.  Appended thereto is an observation in regard to the fading of photographs, and which is the cause of my addressing you on this subject.  I can speak with some authority, having had considerable practice in the art.  Experience convinces me that the fading only arises from an improper treatment; and, were it not for trespassing too much upon your patience, I could add a mode of preparation which defies the effect of time.

The grand obstacle which I find, and which it is far more difficult to overcome, arises from the condition of the old documents themselves.  It is the fact that the size of old paper becomes yellowed by age, whereas the ink becomes lighter; and, since yellow and black are both, even at the best, but very little removed from each other in their power of producing a photographic impression, so the older the manuscript or type the greater the difficulty of obtaining from it an effective photograph—the difference of the colour between the ink and the paper often being but a mere shade, visible to the eye, but in power of reflecting actinic rays identically the same.

I remain, Sir, your most obedient servant, F. Maxwell Lyte, St. Germain-on-Laye, 12, Rue Chateau Neuf, Nov. 30 "/p>

            Crimean Photographs.

Another photographic exhibition connected with the war, and mad extremely interesting by the fact that the pictures are chiefly taken from Sebastopol since its capture, has just been opened at Mr. Kilburn’s, 222 regent St.  There are 58 views in this collection, which has been got together by Mr. Robertson, chief engineer of the Turkish Mint at Constantinople.  As everybody who has been recently to the East is well aware, Mr. Robertson is a most successful photographer, and he has made a truly admirable and felicitous use of his art in the present series.  They enable those who examine them with any degree of care to trace minutely the aspect of the most remarkable spots within and near Sebastopol as they appeared a few days after the place fell.  You see the Redan and the Malakhoff from several different points of view, shivered by the powerful artillery of the allies—the enormous guns, some in position, and curiously protected by mantelettes of cordage against the Minie; others dismounted and useless.  You can note the immense gabioned parapets, bulged in or burst asunder by shot, and the debris of wickerwork, loose earth, and the exploded shells scattered wildly around.  One impression shows the bombproof hut in a the [sic] Russian General sheltered himself from the fierceness of our cannonade; another the salient to which with desperate courage our broken regiments clung on the 9th of September.  The more painful evidences of the carnage had been removed before these views were taken, but every object in them bears token to the fury of the contest; and, though the minuteness with which details are rendered may on a superficial survey create feelings of disappointment, visitors who take the trouble to search the photographs closely will gain from them a far more accurate conception of the siege than can possible by acquired in any other way.  It is curious to contrast the orderly, unruffled appearance of our batteries with the damaged look of the Russian defences, as indicated in these sun pictures.  Besides the views relating more immediately to the siege works, there are others showing the state of the town, of the Karabelnaia suburb, and of the principal public buildings after the fall of the place.  There are also extremely interesting photographs of such subjects as the burial ground on Cathcart’s hill, Kamiesch Bar, Cape Fiolenti, the Monastery of St. George, the British Encampment, Kadikoi, and Balaklava.  There are very few portraits in the collection, and in that respect it is distinguished from Mr. Roger Fenton’s in Pall-mall.  Mr. Fenton shows the three Commanders-in-Chief, struck off on the camera while sitting in council, and fiery little General Bosquet in melo-dramatic pose, as if issuing an order, and nearly all the celebrities of the Crimean campaign, not omitting our own special correspondent, Mr. Russell.  His exhibition has a peculiar interest as showing the state and condition of the British army and of its chiefs in the spring of the year after passing through a terrible winter of suffering and exposure.  In this point of view he has left little further to be desired; but the moment had not then arrived for photographing the Redan and the Malakhoff, the Barrack Battery, the mamelon Vert, and the town and buildings of Sebastopol, as affected by so many bombardments.  To all these objects an overwhelming interest now attaches, and the public will, therefore, welcome the appearance of Mr. Robertson’s collection with unqualified pleasure.  We could wish to see it exhibited in a more spacious apartment than Mr. Kilburn has at his disposal, and that to it should be added a selection of views taken by the same artist within and around Constantinople.  But this becomes of less importance as the series is about to be published.  Indeed we may here observe that from their minute microscopic character photographs are not well adapted for public exhibition; only one person can examine each at a time, and in this respect they belong more to the library than to the gallery of art.  The application of the discoveries of Fox, Talbot, and Daguerre to illustrate the scenes and incidents of the great war in which we are engaged forms one of the most interesting and remarkable features amid the many novelties which the present momentous contest offers, as compared with those of part times, and we hope to see the example set by Mr. Fenton and Mr. Robertson followed up with increasing energy and success.  It appears quite practicable to render Wheatstone’s and Brewster’s stereoscopic invention available so as to give an effect nearly equal to reality of the impressions of the camera.  Sun pictures without the aid of that wonderful instrument, are apt to be flat, hard, and devoid of atmosphere.  By its aid these defects are overcome, and not only so, but the objects represented are magnified to such a degree as to remove entirely the objections which many people not altogether unreasonably entertain to the microscopic character of the art.  It is worthy of remark that in peace and in war Russia seems destined to furnish the inciting motives to our extension of photography.  Mr. Vignoles, the civil engineer, first employed it there as a means of ascertaining the progress of great works which he was conducting for the late Emperor, and now the spirit of private enterprise engages it to help the British nation in appreciating the triumph of the allied arms in the Crimea.
