FURTHER INFORMATION:

            --YEARS COVERED:

~This spreadsheet has been made to show the date spans of photographers when

they were active, and how they overlap with other photographers.

~It does not cover years an individual was in DC, but not actively a

photographer.  However, because many photographers changed

professions, or their occupation wasn't recorded in a directory, it isn't

always possible to ascertain if a photographer was active or not.  Thus

some errors of either omission or inclusion are possible.

~The emphasis is on the first photographers in D.C. in the 1840s until the mid-

1870s.  In some cases I have covered photographers beyond that date, but

not always.  In those cases the reader is referred to: ["see = Baty"]

Baty, Laurie  Photographers of Washington, D.C., 1870-1885.

Thesis submitted to The Faculty or The Graduate School of Arts &

Sciences, G.W. University...for degree of Master of Arts, Feb. 19,

1979.

--Cells with "????" entries indicate that it is likely a photographer was in D.C. but no

            direct evidence.  Examples:

~ City Directories do not exist for all years.  If a photographer was in a directory

for the year before and the year after, I am assuming that unless there is

other evidence, that they were here in the intervening year as well.

~ Newspaper ads frequently carry a code indicating the date when an ad

originated and how long it was to run.  An ad that ran in a newspaper

in one year may have a code indicating it started in a previous year, but

the earlier copy of the ad may not have been found.  In that case I am

assuming the photographer was here but I haven't seen direct evidence.

--Detailed information about photographers in specific years is listed under their names in

            the alphabetical listing.

--Names:  Full personal, partnership and company names are listed in the main text if

they did not fit in the cell.

--Studio names vs. photographer names:  If a studio, such as those run by Plumbe and

Whitehurst had proprietors there are two listings--one for the photographer and

one for the studio.

--Life dates:  If I have made a search and did not locate birth/death dates, I have

entered, "? - ?"

If an individual and nothing is listed, I have not made a search.

If a partnership or company, dates have not been listed
